| | JULIA LAUGHTON (1867 - 1960)

Julia Laughton 1867
courtesy of the John Ivan Laughton collection. The back of this
photograph says "From the Studio of Geo. Rawe, Walkerton
Ontario. It was given by Julia to Miss Jennie Laughton (her
sister). |
Julia Laughton was the 2nd daughter of John
Laughton 1829. The records indicate that she was born on November
25, 1866 in Hamilton, Ontario and that she died on December 30, 1960.
The obituary reports that she moved to Niagara Falls (New York, USA) 70
years ago, which would be circa 1890. It is logical that Julia moved to
Niagara Falls with her father in 1892. Julia never married and is buried with the John Laughton family in
the Niagara Falls
Riverview Cemetery in Canada, along with her sisters Margaret and
Jennie.
As noted elsewhere, it appears that after the early death of he
brother William Severn Laughton 1872 and
his wife Amy (deaths in 1925 and 1927 respectively), Julia and her
sister Margaret took over the care of Williams twin boys William and
John ("Billie & Jack"). From the obituary, it
appears that the family was living at the home of Julia's niece Kathleen
Irene Black (daughter of Mary Ann Laughton
1863).

Julia Laughton may have had control of the "Family Bible"
with many of the legal documents, as we have found reference to that
item. In the package of documents from John Ivan Laughton in March 2009
there were some letters of interest:
Julia Package of
Documents:
 | June 20, 1949 affidavit that certifies the births recorded
in the Family Bible, including that of herself showing she was born
in 1867 and not 1866 and currently residing at 1315 Ontario Avenue,
Niagara Falls, New York USA:
 | John Hugh Laughton, July 1, 1859 - Niagara, Ontario

|
 | January 6, 1954 letter to "Sisters and Brothers",
a New Years Letter:
 | interesting references to who else was at Christmas Dinner
1953 and how the "others" dropped in to play cards -
check out the letter for details and then match the names to the
genealogical charts (this may or may not be correct):
 | Margaret is Julia's sister |
 | Irene is her niece, daughter of Mary Ann Laughton 1863 |
 | Marion is her niece, daughter of William Severn Laughton
1872 |
 | Jack Black is husband of Mary Ann |
 | Min & Dave are her brother David Laughton 1864 and his
wife |
 | Reid Laughton & wife Mollie, son of Edward Laughton
1876 and his wife "Bert" |
 | Not sure who Paul and Dee are in the
letter |
 | "Jack of London" must be the son of her brother
John Hugh Laughton 1859 after he remarried Katie May
Campbell |
 | Bill (twin William 1913) her nephew from her brother
William Severn Laughton 1872 and wife Eleanor |
 | Jack must be the other twin of Bill |
 | Need to find out who Paul and Ivan
are as all I know is of Paul Laughton 1923 and John Ivan
Laughton 1929
|

|
 | January 23, 1995 Letter to Grace Laughton 1905 (niece) and
husband Wally Davis:

The Laughton Homestead
|
We are
fortunate to have this photograph of the family home in Niagara
Falls, New York, as it is a home where a great number of the
Laughton Clan gathered for many years.
I checked on Google Earth in May 2009 and
the home still exists and is not far from the Canada-USA border,
close to the junction of 13th Street and Ontario Avenue. It
looks as if a trip should be made to the site!
If anyone else is looking for the house to
GPS co-ordinates by GE are as follows. Click on the link to see
the location on Google Maps.

"Google Earth Street View" to check out all the house in
that area. |

the table from left to right:

Edward Laughton
Sue Black (nee Lewis - wife of Jack Black)
Jack (see note below - probably Black)

Billy (William Alfred Laughton, twin 1913)
Elenor (Billy's wife - if married in 1936)
Marg (Margaret Laughton 1991 - sister of twins)
The parents of Margaret, Jack and Billy (William Severn Laughton and Amy Catherine
Mann) died in the 1920's and were being raised by the Great Aunt's
in New York.

Julia Laughton 90th Birthday
Daughter of John Laughton 1829
Julia's obituary notes that she
was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls (Ontario,
Canada). Paul's records indicate that the two sisters Julia and
Jean were "both buried with parents on Canadian side,
1/2 mile from the border". That site and the grave markers
have now been identified and photographed at the Niagara
Falls Riverview Cemetery in Ontario.
Also mentioned in her passing is
her nephew Jack C, Laughton, whom we have now determined was John
Campbell Laughton, son of John Hugh Laughton and his second wife
Kate May Campbell.
