MAUREEN MONTGOMERY LAUGHTON (1921 - 1998)

Maureen Montgomery Kennedy (Kennedy/Stephenson), who married Charles Van Wyck Laughton.  Maureen was born in Penticton British Columbia Canada to Josiah. Alexander Chancellor Kennedy (JACK) and Essie Stephenson on October 6, 1921.

Maureen was the 1st Woman Paymaster in the Royal Canadian Navy, stationed in Halifax and Toronto.  The stories we heard were that she withheld Van's pay until he agreed to take her on a date.  Maureen was a life member of the Naval Officers Association.

Maureen attended school in England, Ireland and Wales and during her nursing school era she contracted meningitis.

During the period that Maureen raised her family, she was active in the development of the Exeter Skating Club and the local Girl Guides.

In her later years, Maureen enjoyed her time sailing the North Channel, as well as spending winters in Mexico and Florida.  It was while in Mexico that she suffered a stroke, from which she miraculously survived.  Although left physically incapacitated, Maureen survived several years prior to her final passing in 1998.

Grandmother Laughton's (Granny's) great interest in her later years was most certainly her grandchildren. It is unfortunate that she had this precious time taken from her so early and that the wishes for her grandchildren's future were lost with her passing.
