PAUL MACDONELL LAUGHTON (1923 - 2009)

Without Paul MacDonell Laughton there would not be any genealogy records of the Laughton clan and so this web site would not exist.  For that time and effort, all of the Laughton's are forever grateful. Unfortunately Paul left us on September 26, 2009.

Paul in the arms of his namesake "Grandfather MacDonell", with his brother Charles Van Wyck ("Van") on the running boards of the car.

Paul's and Van's mother Mary Elizabeth MacDonell married George Van Wyck Laughton shortly after WW1.

I have nothing else for Paul from the family, but that spot is always open here and ready for additions.  All that I have now is from his Obituary and from the Memorial Service of October 17, 2009, all of which follows.

The Obituary:

LAUGHTON, Professor Paul MacDonell, 1923 – 2009, WW II Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, Professor of Chemistry at Carleton University, RCAF Reserve, volunteer for many causes, Paul died peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on the morning of September 26th. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor. Loving father of Mary Frances, David (Debbi Andrews), Brian (Muriel) and Keith (Linda Newton). Proud grandfather of Angela, Andrew, Donell, Amy, Alex (Lisa), Stephen, Jennifer and Sara. Many thanks to the staff at Stillwater Creek Retirement Residence and Retire-at-Home for their compassionate and loving care. Paul was immensely proud of his family. We shall miss his dedication to community, his stories, his passion for stamps, scouting and covered bridges, his vast knowledge and his amazing vocabulary in many languages. A service in memory of a life well-lived will be held 5:00 p.m. October 17th at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 971 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa; visitation at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his church, St. Paul’s Presbyterian, or to The Olde Forge.

Of course, I would be remiss if I did not thank Uncle Paul for all that he did to assist me with the Laughton Genealogy Project. He linked me to people, whom I had never heard of, he gave me histories of times I never knew of, and most importantly he shared the knowledge of the history of the Laughton Clan. His dedication to combing the letters and files, the graveyards, the churches and corresponding with so many of the Laughton Clan has made so much of what is here possible.

Here are a few of the special items he sent just to me .... to be shared now in eternity. Thanks Uncle Paul, for all that you have done and shared with the Laughton Clan.
