WILLIAM SEVERN LAUGHTON (1872 - 1927)

One June 21, 2008 an e-mail was received from Lindy Ryan Laughton describing the linkage of her husband (David Michael "Mike" Laughton), son of William Alfred Laughton 1913 (married Eleanor Ramona Ghostley) and grandson of William Severn Laughton 1872 (married Amy Catherine Mann).

The original family tree of Paul Laughton does not show the name of William Severn Laughton's wife Amy Catherine Mann so that is new information.  The family tree does show that there was a son William who married Eleanor.  It is also shown that William "Billie" A. Laughton had a twin brother John "Jack" E. Laughton and two sisters, Marion and Jean. These identities have now been added to the page of John Laughton 1829.

Lindy Ryan Laughton has provided the Family Group Sheet of William Severn Laughton (in PDF format) that provides extensive details on himself, spouse and children.

William Severn Laughton became a "naturalized US Citizen" on July 11, 1990, so we know that he had lived in the United States for the minimum of 5 years prior.  There he owned and operated the "Laughton Creamery & Dairy". The 1910 US Census shows the family at #416 13th Street, Niagara Falls, New York. The 1925 Niagara Falls city directory shows William and Amy at 1759 E. Falls, Niagara Falls, NY and that he worked at Twin Dairy. Amy Laughton died at that home on April 20, 1925

Following up on the initial introduction of the William Severn Laughton members, we received the two pictures from Lindy, one showing William Severn 1872 and the other showing the family of John Laughton 1829, which also shows an older William Severn Laughton.  The family photograph has now been moved to the John Laughton page, along with the identification provided (to which I have added dates and relationships - which I hope are correct).

In the fall of 2008, John Ivan Laughton (Nelson, British Columbia) also started sending in photographs to the family tree project. In the collection were many of the family of William Severn Laughton, particularly ones of the twins Billie & Jack 1913. We have now moved the "twins" to their own pages .... and tried to identify "who is who"!

William Severn Laughton 1872 was the brother of John Hugh Laughton 1859, sons of John Laughton 1829.

The  Family Group Sheet of William Severn Laughton provides the following information on his line:

William Severn Laughton (February 28, 1872 Walkerton ON - March 9, 1927 Niagara Falls NY) and his wife Amy Catherine Mann (December 27, 1883 Lockport NY - April 20, 1925 Niagara Falls NY)
Marion C. Laughton (1907 Niagara County NY - unknown) married to Ronald "Bud" M. Nolan
Margaret "Jean" E. Laughton (March 5, 1911 Niagara Falls NY - June 1987 Niagara Falls NY) marred to Robert Retchless  - no children
William "Bill" Alfred Laughton (July 27, 1913 Niagara Falls NY - September 30, 1986 El Reno, Oklahoma) married on December 28, 1937 to Eleanor Ramona Ghostley
John "Jack" Edward Laughton (July 27, 1913 Niagara Falls NY - January 11, 1994 Alemeda, CA) who was married to Mary Jane McHugh

Note: On the version of this same photograph from John Ivan Laughton received in September 2008 it is noted that on the back of the photo it says:

Dear Aunt Min - Just thought you might like a snap of mother. It isn't very good but it is the best we have.
Love Marion

I presume that "Aunt Min" was the wife of David Laughton 1861 "Mary Eleanor McAlmon". Marion was a daughter and eldest child of William Severn Laughton and Amy Catherine Mann.

William Severn Laughton and Amy Catherine Mann had twin boys William Alfred Laughton and John Edward Laughton, and two daughters Marion C. and Margaret E. (known as "Jean"). William became a naturalized American Citizen on July 11, 1900. As noted in the page for John Laughton 1829, their Aunt Julia raised the twins after the death of the parents in 1927/1925.

William Alfred Laughton is the father of David Michael "Mike" Laughton, whose wife (Lindy Ryan) has been providing all of this new information.

Family Group Sheets provided by Lindy are now available on this site for John 1801; John 1829 and William Severn 1872. These documents contain a great deal of additional information on the Laughton clan.

The "Family Group Sheet" of John Laughton 1829 reports that Julia Laughton (sister of William Severn Laughton) raised the teenage twin boys William Alfred  and John Edward after the death of their parents in 1927 and 1925. Julia, Margaret, Mary and Edward lived together with the twins at 1315 Ontario Avenue in Niagara Falls, ON.

Twins William and John Laughton 1913

I have to assume, although I have not yet compared this to the other photographs, that this is "Father" William Severn Laughton 1872 with his twin sons William "Bill" and John "Jack".

Although there are a number of pictures of the twins in various stages of development there are no photographs where "Mom and Dad" are clearly identified.

For other photographs of the twin boys, please go forward to their pages in the family tree:

William Alfred Laughton
John Edward Laughton

Marion 1907 and Margaret 1911
We also now have pages for Williams daughters:
Marion C. Laughton
Margaret E. Laughton

William's wife Amy is reported buried in Riverdale Cemetery in Niagara County, NY.

In an e-mail from John Ivan Laughton of September 20, 2008 the following information was provided, which may be repetitive but is included here for future editing:

"Marion would be the oldest of four children and she was born about 1907. Next in line was Jean Laughton born around 1910 married to Robert Retchless and they had no children. Then there was the twins William Alfred born July 27/1913, Niagara Falls N.Y.died Sept 30, 1986, El Reno, Oklahoma. Most likely the first of the twins born, as he likely took his father's name. Dr. of Osteopathy John E. Laughton born July 27,1913 also born in Niagara Falls N.Y. was a Pharmacist and had a chain of Drug stores. Retired and was almost blind with Glaucoma (Aunt Julia suffered with the same affliction), but last was living Newark, California with his adopted daughter."
