WILLIAM SINCLAIR LAUGHTON (1888 - 1973)

Photo from John Ivan Laughton Collection
Taken in the Orkney Islands this photo shows Archie Laughton on the left with his son John Laughton, alongside William Sinclair Laughton 1888 (Willie O' the Park).
William Sinclair Laughton was born in Orkney in September 1888 and we believe died circa 1973. William was the 4th child and 2nd son of David Laughton 1841. We often find reference to William as "Willie O' the Park" and it is believed that he is one of the last of the originals who was in touch with John Ivan Laughton 1929, Paul Laughton 1923 and Norman Laughton 1917.

In the picture to the left, Archie refers to Willie as "Grandad". My chart would suggest that Willie was Archie's Uncle and thus John's Great Uncle. Perhaps though they all just referred to him by that name?

William is also the Great Grandfather of Sue Yannaghas (nee Petrie) who is now an active contributor to information on the Laughton family from the Orkney Isles of Scotland.  Sue is a resident of Scotland and the first to join the Laughton Family Tree Team from outside North America.

Willie married Annie Kirkness and had eight (8) children, 6 daughters and 2 sons:

Daughters
Annie Laughton (October 25, 1915 - 2005)
married John Arnold Petrie
son Jack Petrie married Kay
Sue Petrie married ___ Yannaghas
Thorfinn Petrie
Sidney Petrie
William Sinclair Petrie
Shelia Petrie (Crighton)
Marion Petrie (Parker)
Eva Laughton (1915 - 1968)
married John R. Foubister
had at least one daughter (see letter)
Margaret Laughton (February 25, 1920 - survived)
married _____ Randall
Jessie Jane Laughton (May 21, 1921 - deceased)
Helen Laughton (April 26, 1923 - unknown situation)
Patricia Harcus Laughton (1929 - November 5, 2001)

Sons
William Sinclair Laughton (April 24, 1925 - 1998)
James Laughton (December 30, 1932 - February 23, 1933)

In the files that came from John Ivan Laughton in March 2009 there was an original letter from Eva Foubister (nee Laughton) that was written 2 years after the death of Willie's wife Annie, who died of a stroke.  Once we have a date of death for Annie, we will know the approximate date of the letter. Eva reports that she is the 2nd daughter of Willie and Annie, so I presume her birth year of 1915 is incorrect, as that is also the date given for the 1st daughter Annie. I presume that the letter was written to John Ivan Laughton as it was an original from which I made the scan.

There was also a letter from Willy himself to John Ivan Laughton in response to the notice posted in the Orcadian.  This letter is dated April 24, 1960.

Letter from Willy Laughton - April 24, 1960

In his letter of April 1960, Willy reported on the status of the offspring of the various Laughton family members born out of John Laughton 1801, who was Willy's grandfather:

Elizabeth "Betsy" Laughton, christened May 23, 1915
married Archibald Foubister in 1851
family of four are all deceased
Sarah Laughton, February 15, 1833
married David Wooldrage
two daughters still alive in 1960 and Mary not married
David Laughton, 1841
family of 5, 3 deceased and2 alive (but only 4 on chart?) - Willy being the youngest son who reports he will be 72 in September, now a great grandfather

There are other links to "Willie O' The Park" and they may be in the "History Collection".

William Sinclair Laughton
In January 2010 we received this great picture of William Sinclair Laughton (Willie O' the Park) from his grandson Hamish Crisp.

Hamish is the son of Patricia Harcus Laughton (1929-2001) and Jim Crisp (80 years old and living in Kirkwall, Orkney in 2010). Patricia was the 6th daughter of Willie.

Also provided by Hamish was a picture of Willie's sister Jessie Jean Laughton, who died of the Spanish Flu in 1919:
