WHAT'S NEW, THE WEB SITE UPDATES
The first thing that was new to this web site is this page that will record
what is new, so when you check back you can find out what has changed since your
last visit.
You can reach the family research pages for either the FAMILY TREE or the
GREAT WAR web site now at a common HOME
PAGE. You can also access all the pages at the new TelNic network, which for
our ancestors is at:
If you see "blue text"
on any of the web pages, that is a reminder to me that I have to complete a
task. If you see any of those notes and want to know the current status, just
ask. It might help remind me that I need to complete that
assignment. If you see something that needs to be done, but is not
blue, let me know and I will see what can be done.
You can monitor any page on the Family Tree web site and thus be
automatically notified of any changes. Just click OK on the following
panel and a "pop up" window will appear where you can enter (or cut
and paste) any URL for from this site for continuous monitoring. If you want to
just monitor this UPDATE PAGE, add your e-mail address and click OK - it is that easy. You can go back to
the site and remove your name at any time.
What follows is our tracking of the major changes made to
the web site:
 | March 23, 2010: It has been almost a year since major updates have
been made, however the minor changes and additions were carried out during
the year - such as the new information from the cemetery visits in 2009 and
the additional information and photographs uploaded to the site. The most
significant updates in the March 2010 issue are related to the family lines
of:
The new information in the David Laughton 1841 line
relates to the information under his son William Sinclair Laughton
(1888-1973), thanks to the information provided by Williams children's
offspring, namely Sue Petrie and Hamish Crisp who reside in Scotland.
The new information in the David Laughton 1864 line
comes from the vast amount of information and photographs sent in by John
Ivan Laughton (1929). We have added the WWI and WWII service records of
William Muir Laughton and John Addison Corbett Laughton, plus linked to the
cemetery in Nelson, British Columbia. Through these links we have now
established contact with David Benson Laughton
(1920).
Since May of 2009 when we last made our major update,
we have also made our final farewells to Paul
MacDonell Laughton (1923) - the founder of the family tree schematics
and to Joan Laughton - wife of John Ivan
Laughton (1929).
If you want to follow any one person in the family
tree, you can also now link to their page quickly by way of the links on the
TelNic network, under the Laughton account at this location:
If you want to send an e-mail to the FAMILY TREE PROJECT and have it
addressed immediately, you can now write to our founding father Gilbert
Laughton 1771 (e-mail: gilbert.laughton@gmail.com).
For almost immediate updates to changes in the Laughton family tree project,
Gilbert now has his own Twitter Account. You can join Gilbert on Twitter to
get updates automatically or sign just check in at your pleasure - either
way, Gilbert and I do hope you stay in touch!
|
 | May 9, 2009: It took some time, but I have now
scanned and uploaded all the photographs that came from John Ivan Laughton
in the March-April 2009 packages. I did my best to sort these and place the
photographs on the "Personal Page" of the person who best
represented that part of the family. In most cases I went back to the
primary link for that family group. As such, you need to check the pages of
the person you are reviewing, as well as their ancestors. In addition, I
placed all the "Unknown Photographs" in one directory which you
can access from either the QUESTIONS page
or the UNKNOWN PHOTOS page. The main
"people directories" that were upgraded with the new photographs
are as follows:
|
 | April 18, 2009: In March 2009 John
Ivan Laughton 1929 sent a massive amount of documents with letters from
many generations, all for scanning and inclusion on the Laughton Family Tree
Web Site. The vast majority of that information has now been scanned and
uploaded to the family site. There are a few "historical
items" still to be added but all the important information is now on
the site. It also means that I must once again update the "Charts"
as many of the questions have been addressed and/or new information came
from the documents. The following pages have either been added or updated as
a result of this new information: Betsy
(Elizabeth)1825; Jean (Jane) 1828; John
1829; Thomas 1831; David
1841; David 1864; Sarah
1833; Julia 1867; Edward
1876; William "Willie" 1888;
Herbert 1887; Bruce
Norman 1917; John Addison Corbett 1895; John
Edward 1913; William Alfred 1913; Archie
(unknown); and David 1920. In
April 2009 a second package arrived from John Ivan Laughton with a great
collection of photographs dating back many years. I have sorted but I
have not scanned those as of this date, but do stay tuned for the next
update.
|
 | February 24, 2009: New information has been
arriving from Sue Yannaghas (nee Petrie) and now her father Jack Petrie (son
of Annie Laughton 1915). This new information has been used to update the
chart of David Laughton1841 as well as the Cemetery
Page (Orkney added).
|
 | February 17, 2009: Almost all of the additions
from the Paul Laughton Collection (files from everyone that Paul had
and David delivered) have been added to the web site. It has taken a
lot of sorting, filing, scanning and posting - but I think it is all been
very worthwhile. There are not many (if any) pages that have not been
updated in one form or another. Some of the major changes are noted here:
 | The "Historical Collections" from
our world-wide contributors have been uploaded to the IMAGE
and DOCUMENT folders on the web site, most of
which are mentioned in the significantly updated section on the "Family
History". To get the true value of this information, you really
must download the original documents as they were written. Some
documents date back to 1940. Some of the original images date back to
1914. Images of family records date back to 1860. |
 | There are some "Questions" or
"Issues" that were unresolved prior to this upgrade of
the site, some of which are still unresolved, so we need help from other
members of the clan that may have access to other information. As such
we have created a new page QUESTIONS
and there you will find 2 tables, one with unresolved matters and one
with resolved matters. There is enough information posted in each
of those sections to explain what is needed or what was found. The
questions related to Thomas Laughton 1831 and Bruce Laughton 1901 have
now been resolved, but the questions related to John Van Wyck Laughton
1896 and Louise Estelle Van Wyck 1860 remain unresolved. |
 | There are new pages for some of the family members
(and more to be created shortly) that resulted from the mass of
additional information in Uncle Paul's files and the new information
arriving almost daily from LAUGHTON FAMILY members worldwide. The
easiest way to see what is new is to look at the main list on the ERA
Index Page, as each person who has a page is hyperlinked. If you
have an interest in a specific family member that you want to have a
separate page, just let me know. Additional information and
photographs would be most welcome. |
What started out to be a small project to build a family tree from
Gilbert Laughton to my direct family has certainly changed over the past
year. Thanks to all that are contributing, for without that additional
information none of these upgrades would have been possible!
|
 | February 7, 2009: Many new additions have been
made to the web site as a result of considerable information that was
provided by David Laughton (1953) son of Paul MacDonell
Laughton (1923) during his visit to Milton on January 31, 2009. David
brought with him all of his dad's files and has left them with me to scan
and add to the web site. This is also the first opportunity to see the
original Paul Laughton handwritten family tree charts, so a few corrections
can be made to "hard to read items".
February 2009 also brought the addition of Sue Petrie (from Scotland)
to the Laughton Family Tree project. Sue is the Great Great Granddaughter of
David Laughton (1839/1841) and Great
Granddaughter of William Laughton (1888). William's daughter Annie
(Sue's grandmother) married John Arnold Petrie. Sue has family
information from Scotland that we might not otherwise have and most
certainly has the most knowledgeable information about the David Laughton
line. Sue has also been to "Vigga" (the homestead in
Holm, Orkney) and hopefully will be able to share some current pictures of
the homestead with us? We will add this information to David's page until
such time there is enough information to expand that line.
Lastly, the information posted in February 2009 contains new
information from the Canadian
Census of 1891 and the new LDS
Pilot Project for Family Tree Research, each of which are very good
searchable data bases. We were able to locate the on-line copies of
the census documents for each of Jerome and John Laughton in Walkerton and
John Hugh Laughton in Parkhill, as well as identify kin from Canada, the
United States and Scotland.
|
 | November 2008: As part of our annual Remembrance
Day Projects for 2008 we have completed service summaries and uploaded
the service records of a number of the Laughton men that served in the Great
War (World War One 1914-1919). On the main listing you will find that any
men that served in the Great War now have their name in BOLD and their
SERVICE NUMBER listed beside their name. Each of the men now have their own
"Military Service Page" which you can find in my BLOG sites for Soldiers
of the Great War. If you know of another Laughton that served, that has
not been remembered in this fashion, please provide me with the details that
you have and I will take it from there. Service Records have not yet
been released in the same format that would enable us to do this for those
serving in WWII but that will come in the future. The only WWI Soldier that
has his own web site is George
Van Wyck Laughton, M.C. 1897.
|
 | September 2008: Welcome to John Ivan Laughton
(1929), grandson of David Laughton 1861 and
son of John Addison Corbett Laughton (1895) who has joined us from Nelson,
British Columbia. John Ivan tells me he has "trunks" of
photographs and information that he will share and that he had prior contact
with Uncle Paul in Ottawa. He got in contact with me through Lindy
Ryan Laughton (see below June 2008). We have now added a two new
family genealogy charts (check the Genealogy Page)
to show the new information under David Laughton as well as to begin to show
more about the family under John Laughton 1801.
Stay tuned for what we believe will be a steady trickle of new information
from John Ivan Laughton.
|
 | July 2008: Following up on the cemetery
information, I traveled to Niagara Falls to clean and photograph the John
Laughton 1829 and Edward Laughton sites, each being a separate area at the
Fairview Cemetery. That new information has now been uploaded to the
web site and concurrently I have made a separate web page for each of the
cemeteries, shown as Parkhill Union Cemetery (John Hugh Laughton 1859);
Niagara Falls Fairview Cemetery (John Laughton 1829, Edward Laughton); and
Exeter Cemetery (George Laughton 1897). The Niagara Falls visit was to
"new standards" so I will need to go back to
Parkhill and Exeter to get current information.
|
 | July 2008: Following up on the incredible amount
of information that we received from Lindy Ryan Laughton, I have spent some
time going back through all the Laughton pages from John
1801, through to John 1829 and all the
siblings. One of the major tasks was to update the Digitized Genealogy
Chart, as it had a number of updates that were pending and many questions,
many of which were answered with Lindy's information. This lead us back into
some of the deeper areas of the family tree, including the spouses of John
Hugh Laughton (to his 2nd wife and the new Laughton clan) and the spouse of
George Van Wyck Laughton (where secrets still lie dormant). The obituary
notices from Lindy also lead us to the location of the family plot of John
Laughton 1829 and Edward Laughton 1876 at the Fairview
Cemetery in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
|
 | June 2008: The web site was updated to include
new and corrected information, including the addition of new members of the
Laughton Clan that had sent in information. You will find this information
now posted under the revised list in the Laughton Eras.
Significant new information came from Lindy Ryan Laughton from Plano, Texas.
Lindy is married to David Michael Laughton "Mike", son of
William A. Laughton and grandson of William Severn Laughton. William
Severn was brother to John Hugh Laughton, the origin of my chain of the
Laughton clan. Lindy has sent along photographs of the family that are now
posted on the pages of John Laughton 1829
and William Severn Laughton 1872.
|
 | April 22, 2007: Although it has been some time since we
updated this site, we do continue to watch for new information. This
month we discovered that the Legislative Assembly of Ontario had added the
details of all of the Ontario MPPs in each of the Parliaments. As
such, we have added the information for Fred
Van Wyck Laughton in the 18th Parliament of the Province of Ontario.
|
 | May 10, 2006: A fellow researcher advised me of the release
of the Automated Canadian Census for 1901 and 1911, made available thanks to
a number of genealogists who have painstakingly transcribed the files into
computer searchable format. With this new information, we have
assembled all of the Canadian census data we had on this web site and moved
it to its own page at Canada
Census under the category of the Registration Pages.
|
 | January 31, 2006: An e-mail from the OGS
Register sent me back to check the newly posted 1861 and 1871 census for
the Orkney Islands, our origins in Scotland. That new information has
been posted. As always, a little nudge encourages one to keep going,
so I spent the rest of the day scanning some of the pictures that had been
collected over the past year, the majority of which have been added to the
individuals web pages. The rest will follow in the next day or two (posted
February 1, 2006).
There are some interesting pictures of Harry,
Fred
and sister Louise
that have not been seen before. I have also fixed the dates of the younger
Laughton's that did not survive in the late 1800's, as I realized this
information was shown on the family tombstone at the Parkhill Cemetery.
|
 | November 18, 2005: Thanks to feedback from Mary Frances
Laughton and Amy Rae Laughton, we have updated the information on the family
member names and birthdates for the children and grandchildren of Paul
MacDonell Laughton. We hope to have more details and photos on this
part of the clan in the near future, as perhaps Amy has now been inspired?
The new updates are on the ERA
Index Page, as well as in the genealogy
chart (also in PDF).
|
 | July 27, 2005: In July 2005 there was information
posted relating to the fully indexed 1901 Canadian Census now available on
the Internet and the recent release of the 1911 Census on the Library and
Archives Canada site (not yet fully indexed). A quick check of the
1901 census revealed a near complete listing of the Van Wyck Laughton clan
in the Parkhill area. Please refer to the link of LAUGHTON
1901 CENSUS or go to our Genealogy
Page for the details and other links. A check of the 1911 census
in raw format (PDF of microfilm) resulted in a find for the Laughton
1911 data.
|
 | April 18, 2005: As the work continues on the Great War
research project we George Van Wyck Laughton, I have added the text of the
letter of August 2003 that summarizes the life and history of grandfather
"Gummie Laughton". We have also added a number of other
pages on the two sites over the winter, including the pages from the Toronto
Star Archives that are posted on George's
page. Lastly, we received information from Bruce
Norman "Norm" Laughton, grandson of Jerome
Laughton 1834 and son of Herbert
Laughton 1887.
|
 | September 6, 2004: Sadly, we have had to update the web site to
record the passing of Charles
Van Wyck Laughton. We have added the information for the obituary
and eulogy, as prepared by my sister and Van's 2nd daughter, Geordie Maureen
Farrell (Laughton). Many of the family members attended the memorial in
London, bringing many family stories and "history bytes". We
hope to be able to bring some of these to you in the near future. We
have also added the update date to each of the web pages so that you can
better determine how current the information is at the time of viewing.
|
 | July 2, 2004: We have now reformatted our Contact
Information with an aim to reducing SPAM e-mail that has been proliferated
by web mail robots capturing posted e-mail addresses. Our contact
information has now been centralized on the CENSOL web site, where you can
read our e-mail address but you must enter it manually in order to contact us
directly.
|
 | May 31, 2004: It was a rainy and cool day here in Milton and
that took me to the attic to find the old family files that had been stored
away, sorting for both our daughters and to find information for the web
site. There are some interesting new pictures now posted on the web
sites for the Van Wyck brothers (see John
Hugh, Clair,
George,
Fred
and Harry)
as well as for their sons Charles
and Paul.
|
 | May 29, 2004: The information from Paul MacDonell Laughton, to whom
we all owe great gratitude for starting this project many years ago, has been
added to a number of the web sites. This is based on the information
contained in his three
letters and we look forward to receiving a lot more of that great
information! This has been posted mainly into the pages of the John
Hugh Laughton offspring and the new Van
Wyck page. Also, we are soliciting information for the existing family
members of both the Paul MacDonell Laughton and the Charles Van Wyck Laughton
lines. Please send in your text for parents and siblings alike.
|
 | May 27, 2004: Mail arrives from Norm
Laughton, son of Herbert Laughton, grandson of Jerome (Jorome) Laughton,
and great grandson of John Laughton and Jane Spence. We now have new
information for another branch in the tree which has been added to the Eras
Page as a new branch off John Laughton (1801). Later in the day time
is spent looking for Laughton's in Ontario, as I try to determine who might be
buried in Walkerton (none shown), Exeter (George and Beth) and Parkhill (John
Hugh and the clan). Some new information is located through the Ontario
Genealogical Society and the Cemetery Finding Aid - details now on the bottom
of the Registers
Page. Some of us are even in the Belleville Mausoleum!
|
 | May 22, 2004: Since I already spent most of the day checking and
posting the Scotland On-Line issues, I thought I might as well return at the
end of the day and spend a few hours to post the Toronto Star articles, before
I forgot where they were and why I obtained them. These are now posting
in the individual era web sites, primarily as they relate to Great Great
Grandfather John
Hugh Laughton and his sons Fred
Van Wyck, Harry
Van Wyck and George
Van Wyck. There may be more that I have not yet uncovered and of course
there is the question as to "should I now check the Globe &
Mail"?
|
 | May 22, 2004: I still have not posted the news clippings from the
Toronto Star but I will try to get to that soon. Seems that our real
project work in Nicaragua and Sudbury interfered with my project, coupled with
the start of Spring and the mandatory garden chores, including the new deck
construction. An e-mail from "Scotland
On-line" got me back on to the work for the morning (okay the day),
as they had an error in their search engine and gave me until May 25th to redo
the marriage searches. This did turn up a lot of new data. I also
took the opportunity to buy some more credits (it is not free!) and print our
a number of the original Parish and Census records. These are now posted
on the OGS
Registry page of this web site. I was particularly interested
in a few of the original documents that show some conflict with the genealogy
chart that we have today, such as is the case with Thomas Laughton (son of
John Laughton and Jane Spence in 1832) who appears to have a different wife
and did not die in Canada.
|
 | April 21, 2004: It has been a week since the old HP 4c scanner
crashed and now I am back in service with a new HP 8250. Some new and
interesting pictures have been added for George
Van Wyck Laughton and more will follow over the next few days. I
also have been able to obtain a number of news clippings from the Toronto Star
archives for John Hughes Laughton and his sons Harry, Frederick and
George. The war related clippings for George will be posted on the Great
War site, others will appear here. See also the photograph of Louise
Van Wyck Laughton and Mary Buckley Laughton (married to Harry Van Wyck
Laughton). During this period I have also been starting to put details
on the Great War site for the Tyneside
Irish.
|
 | April 16, 2004: I took a few days off the family tree to go back to
record some additional information on the site for George Van Wyck Laughton on
his Great War web site
as a result of finding the family photos of George in post war Toronto.
I was trying to scan these when my 8 year old workhorse HP6100c appears to
have gone up in smoke - slight delay as we troubleshoot - maybe worse.
While tending to the reboots and troubleshooting (you will understand the time
if you have your own system) I started reading the history of the 34th
Division (of which the NF 26th was a part) and next thing I know it is Friday
the 16th! This turned out to be quite a diversion as I discovered there
were two G. Laughton's in the Division, which appears to be the reason for the
errors in the historical records (a major problem, not yet resolved).
Not to quit, I have just gone back and updated John 1801 but I need the master
to check some of the names (David - you saw the master,
can you assist?)
|
 | April 15, 2004: You can now go to http://www.censol.ca/research/
and catch a link to either the Great War site or the Family Tree site.
|
 | April 11, 2004: No entries, just a note to acknowledge
that Paul MacDonell Laughton has sent me an excellent note (dated April 6,
2004) pertaining to this work, along with digital photos taken by son David
Laughton. I will enter this information in the weeks ahead - there is a
lot to digest. (David - should we post the complete
letter of April 6th along with the earlier letter of August 23, 2003 - would
your dad mind?)
|
 | April10, 2004: I have just been "blown away" by the
e-mail that came from Cousin David, son of Paul MacDonell Laughton, and the
information that was contained therein. Whatever has been assembled to
date is now irrelevant compared to this "first hand"
information. I think I shall pause for a while to wait for more, as that
will certainly make the next step easier. I will ask David if we can
post his Dad's message for all the family to read .... you will be entranced!
|
 | April 8, 2004: Starting to fill in the text on the various
members of the clan and to try and fill in the missing spots on the genealogy
chart. There is now text for Gilbert
1771, John
1801, John
Hugh 1859 and Frederick
Van Wyck 1882. There is no rhyme nor reason to the order with which
I am entering information, it appears as a passing fancy.
|
 | April 7, 2004: New and revised dates have been added to the Genealogy
Chart, primarily in the issue of John Laughton and Jane Spence.
Marriage dates have also been added where known and are required for
current generations, along with all details of sons and daughters (birthdates,
marriages and children).
|
 | April 6, 2004: Information from the Mormon listings have been
posted to Genealogy
and the web site has been expanded to include a Register
section and the revised dates from the two registration sites will be added to
the genealogy chart.
|
 | April 5, 2004: Information is found on the Orkney
Genealogy web site that provides long lists of Laughton's marriages,
births and christenings from the Holm & Paplay areas on the
Orkney's. These lists come from the Mormon records (Church of Jesus
Christ of the Later-day Saints, Utah).
|
 | April 4, 2004: Geordie Farrell (nee Laughton) provides
information from the family bible of Louis Van Wyck Laughton, providing information
not previously on the family tree.
|
 | April 3, 2004: Initial searches are made on the web for
genealogy sites that may have Laughton information. First big hit is the
Genuki
site relating to the Orkney's. E-mails are sent out to genealogy researchers
who have posted offers to help in research from the Orkney's.
|
 | April 2, 2004: The web site goes public on the Allstream
Network and family members are notified and asked for information. First
efforts are made to convert the genealogy
chart of Paul MacDonell Laughton to a computerized format.
|
 | April 1, 2004: The web
site is commissioned as a result of the article in the Toronto Star on
March 31, 2004, highlighting the exploits of Mary Buckley Laughton (see
news clipping in Toronto Star), wife of Harry
Van Wyck Laughton. |

The
initiative for this web site came as a result of an advertisement from
the Women's Law Association that focused on Mary Buckley Laughton.
From the archives of the Women's Law Association
of Ontario:
WLAO
Web site note:
In 1919, Laura Denton (Duff) and Helen Currie, were two students-at-law in Toronto. They would be the 20th and the 32nd woman lawyers called to the Bar in Ontario in 1920 and 1921 respectively. They co-founded the Women's Law Association of Ontario. The first meeting was held in the offices of Frank Denton, K.C., Laura Denton Duff's father, with whom she worked. Records are scant of the earliest meetings, but the attendees of that first meeting showed their intention to continue, and planned an annual meeting. Attendees at that first meeting included:
Mary Buckley Laughton '15, Helen Palen '18, Evelyn Harrison of London '21, and Apha Hodgins of Bowmanville '19. In that year every woman ever admitted to membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada, at most 35 lawyers and law students, was invited to a meeting to be held at the Inglewood Tea Rooms on the southwest corner of Spadina Avenue at Bloor. Clara Brett Martin was the keynote speaker. 10
