As promised, I have used the cold Canadian winter to begin sorting these
links into areas of
relevance. For now it seems that the main areas of interest are the
BEF, the CEF and the Irish Brigades. Those that do not seem to fit
exactly into one of those categories are listed as "other".
The BEF (British Expeditionary Force) is important to this site, as
George Van Wyck Laughton server in France in the British 3rd Army. The
CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) is key, as he started with the CEF
and returned to the CEF after WWI, where he also served in WWII. The
Tyneside Irish Brigade was a unit of the BEF, where he served with the 26th
Northumberland Fusiliers.
I have recently added links to newspaper (and other
related news) archive sites
as they provide an excellent source of historical information. I have
used the Toronto Star "Pages of the Past" on numerous occasions,
which although are a "fee for service" site are well worth the few
dollars. Thanks to Chris Wright on the CEF
Forum for the link to the Alberta newspapers, which are searchable for
free.
If you know of other links that would be applicable to my
research, please let me know.
I have noted that as my research has progressed that
others have added links back to our research pages. Most recently
(September 2003) I see that the picture of George Van Wyck Laughton has been
added to the page of the "Tyneside Irish, 26th N.F.":
We had previously discovered that the complete text of
Nicholson's book on the Canadian Expeditionary Force was available
(without schematics or colour maps) on the Department of National Defence Web
site for "Out of Circulation" books. In April 2003 the site
was completely rebuilt and the book is now posted in a more favourable PDF
format, in a much smaller size, but still 600+ pages:
As the DND site does not contain the Nicholson maps, we
undertook to scan all of the main maps in this text. These are posted
on this web site at:
